Helpful Information
Q: Do I need a doctor's referral?
A: You do not need a referral. In the state of Wisconsin, Occupational Therapy is a direct access service, meaning that you do not need a referral for an evaluation and treatment by an occupational therapist, the decision to obtain OT services is made by you.
If you are hoping to submit your claim to your insurance provider for reimbursement, your insurance provider may require a referral from your provider for Occupational Therapy services. In that case, you will need a referral or order from your provider prior to your initial appointment.
Referrals may be accepted from a physician, dentist, podiatrist, advanced practice nurses, chiropractors, optometrists, physical therapists, physician assistants, psychologists, or other health care professionals.
